Upgrade modules are general systems that improve or increase a spacecraft's capabilities, but are not directly part of the sublight engines or weapons and are not mounted on hardpoints. A spacecraft's "upgrade capacity" is the number of upgrade slots it has. Some upgrade modules require more than one slot.

Tradeoffs

All upgrade modules impose a price for the benefits they offer. An enhanced cargo hold, for example, decreases a spacecraft's speed or maneuverability. A gun capacitor allows more energy to be transferred to guns, but at the cost of energy available to shields or engines.
